Campo Bajo is the original course at Querencia, the private residential estate set on 840 acres between Palmilla and Costa Azul, just outside San José del Cabo. It was Tom Fazio’s first course design outside the United States, and it drew strong praise when it opened in 2000. In 2016 Golf Digest included it among the World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses, and it continues to rank among the very best in Mexico.

This is golf in the hills rather than on the beach. The holes follow ridgelines and drop through valleys and rocky ravines, with native cactus and flowering desert plants lining the way and long views out to the Sea of Cortez. The terrain does the talking: elevated tees, carries across deep arroyos and greens perched on ledges give the round its character.

It earns its place on this list for its quiet exclusivity as much as its design. Querencia is one of the most private golf communities in Los Cabos, and Campo Bajo has the feel of a true members’ course: uncrowded, immaculately kept and built around the landscape rather than a resort schedule.

What to expect

Expect a demanding, scenic round where accuracy matters. Thick rough waits for wayward drives, several short holes play across canyons, and the elevation changes make club selection part of the challenge. Carts are mandatory. The course is also entering a new chapter: Fazio has returned to design a second layout at Querencia, Campo Alto, with a grand opening for members planned for November 6, 2026, which makes Querencia a two-course club.

Good to know

  • Querencia is a private golf and residential community; play is limited to resident members and their guests.
  • There is no public tee sheet, so visitors need an invitation from a member.
  • The course lies in the hills of the Tourist Corridor near San José del Cabo, with Sea of Cortez views rather than beachfront holes.
  • Older guides may list it simply as Querencia Golf Club, from the years before Campo Alto.
