Twin Dolphin is the course Fred Couples calls home. The Masters champion and World Golf Hall of Fame member, who is also a resident and member of the community, co-designed it with architect Todd Eckenrode of Origins Golf Design, and it opened for play in December 2018 after more than a decade in the making. The club sits within Twin Dolphin, a 1,400-acre community on the site of the former Hotel Twin Dolphin, next to Montage Los Cabos.

The course occupies a sloping plateau on the inland side of the coastal highway, about 180 meters above sea level. That elevation gives every hole a view of the Sea of Cortez, with the peaks of the Sierra de la Laguna behind. Holes wind through canyons, desert arroyos and rock outcrops, and native vegetation was left intact between them.

It earns its place here for its thoughtful details. The par-72 layout reaches 7,156 yards from the back, with several tee combinations, and it includes a 95-yard bye hole played over an arroyo, plus Niños tees that turn the course into a 2,300-yard layout for children, beginners and families.

What to expect

Expect firm, fast fairways on sand-capped ground and undulating greens, with ocean views from every hole. Two Red Door comfort stations sit on the course, a caddie program is in place, and the practice facilities use Trackman technology. The course is irrigated with non-potable water from on-site desalination and treatment plants, an unusual commitment in the desert.
