Behind the mission church and main square of San José del Cabo, a few cobbled blocks hold the densest cluster of fine art in Los Cabos. The Gallery District is the cultural heart of the old town, and on Thursday evenings in season it becomes the region’s most charming night out: the Art Walk, a free open-house that local gallery owners started in 2006.

The setting does half the work. San José is one of the oldest continuously settled communities on the Baja peninsula, and its Jesuit mission dates to 1730. Walk its colonial streets as the light fades, with the church lit up and gallery doors open, and the evening feels far removed from the beach clubs of the Corridor.

The other half is the art itself. Contemporary Mexican painting and sculpture hang a few doors away from folk art, Huichol beadwork and designer jewellery, so serious collectors and first-time buyers both find something to talk about.

What to expect

The heart of the walk is a two-block stretch of Calle Álvaro Obregón between Hidalgo and Guerrero, closed to cars for the evening, with activity spilling onto the side streets near Plaza Mijares. Many galleries offer wine and snacks, and the historic Parroquia Misión San José is lit and open to visitors on Art Walk nights. Names to look for include Galería Corsica, the Iván Guaderrama Art Gallery, Galería de Ida Victoria, Patricia Mendoza Gallery, La Sacristía in a restored 19th-century chapel, and Old Town Gallery. Outside Art Walk nights, the galleries keep regular hours and are calmer for unhurried browsing.
